Whistler Franz Rock Slide

by Nick Vail on January 5, 2010

At the end of the 2008/2009 Winter season Phil and I still had a few things on our lists to shoot before Whistler closed for the season.

At the begining of the season when I was riding down to Creekside I noticed a lot of riders where doing a rock slide on the side of a big rock face, which looked pretty fun. So it was basically on my list for the whole season to shoot, but was so busy it never got done until one day Phil and I managed to get to the location and set up shop.

Whistler Rock Slide - Alpha Lake

We only had one shovel so Phil was doing all the digging. We had to make a little ramp out of snow to pop the snowboarder perfectly onto the rock face. It took a while to build due to the snow conditions of the spring time in Whistler, but Phil managed to build a decent jump onto the rock and had a lot of fun sliding the rock.

When I first say people riding this feature on the mountain I had a good idea for an angle to shoot from. I wanted to get above the rider and use a telephoto lens to isolate the rider in the back ground of Whistler Valley and Alpha lake. I managed to get the shot that I was happy with so I switched up the angle to place Phil in the sky.

Overall it was a good photo shoot for the last one on Whistler that season, and it turned into a good photo day because I continued shooting in the skate park later on that day with a few BMX friends, Luke and Dave.
