Whistler Panoramic Jumps and Pillow Lines

by Nick Vail on December 16, 2009

At the end of last season two of my good friends and I dropped into the back side of Whistler from the peak where Matt Henry and Co had built a nice long jump with some beautiful scenic views in the back ground.

The ride down to the jump was nice soft snow and a lot of un-touched terrain. When we arrived at the jump Co noticed that it had been altered a bit since they where there last so it needed a bit of work before they started hitting it.

The nice thing about the jump besides the spectacular views was that it had a back country feel to it, there was no one else around besides you and your crew which made for some more unique photo opportunities that you wouldn’t get in the Whistler Blackcomb terrain park.

Once the jump was finished being prepped Matt Henry and Co started the hike. Since this was on the back side of Whistler there where no luxury lift access to this jump so each hit was spanned by a 15 minute hike up a steep slope.

Both Co and Matt Henry hit the jump just a few times because the jump wasn’t feeling right – not to mention the straining hike they had to endure after each jump.

I can totally feel there pain of having to hike that hill each time because once we finished shooting that jump we all had to hike back up to the peak of Whistler to catch a trail back down to another spot that Co wanted to hit before the end of the season.

There was a pillow line somewhere on Whistler that was still fresh at the end of the season which was pretty surprising considering the amount of snow we received that year. It took a little bit of searching to find the spot but when we did Co was pretty stoked to drop in.

It didn’t take me long to find my angle and before we knew it Co was sending himself off a decent cliff into a fluffy powder landing. Fun times where had and we finished off the day with a cold brew on the patio while flipping threw the pictures on the camera that we had captured that day.
