Snake Run

by Nick Vail on May 27, 2009

A few days ago like most days at the skate park some sick riding was thrown down. After riding hard for the past week I decided to take it easy and bring out the camera for my first bmx photos of the year.

John did a sick channel gap into the deep end of the bowl, which was insane from the video that I saw, wish I was there when it happened to snap a photo. But Dave and Luke where throwing down on the butterfly step up and step down styles.

Luke got the sickest inverted table over the butterfly along with some can can’s, euro tables and a dialed 360 to name a few.

Then Dave steps it up with a clicked turn down and then does the same on his massive step down’s into the deep end of the snake run.

Got some sick photos and finished the day off with some cold beers. Good times.

Hey Nick, big fan of your photos. I am 19 and and i am an aspiring action sports photographer. I am working on getting camera skills with my aunt who is a photographer in saskatchewan, but i am originally from B.C. I like your BMX photos especially seeing as thats the action sport i want to spent most of my time capturing on film;being a rider myself. I was also wondering if you had any tips for getting into the business of extreme sports photography.
Thanks… Tanner Johnston

Hi Tanner,

Thanks for the comments.

If your looking to get into action sports photography a good thing to do it hang out at the skate park or dirt jumps in your area with your camera gear and start asking the good riders if they want to shoot some photos. Any rider would be stoked to get some photos of them doing something they love to do. Once you get a season of photos under your belt start contacting BMX magazines with an introductory email to get to know the editors and once you’ve established a relationship with them you can start submitting photos to them. If they like what they see then you’ll start getting things in their magazine or maybe on their website blog, depending on what there looking for.

Its not an easy business to get into, I’ve been taking action sports photos for a good 6 years and I’ve only started to see my photos get picked up by magazines. Its a tough road but if you love taking photos and lots of talent to take photos of then all you have to do is just start shooting photos all the time.

Feel free to send me a link to some of your photos If you have some or when you start to build a portfolio and I can offer some feedback.
